A great day out ended up being a great day fundraising at the inaugural Norwood and Miraka Charity Golf Tournament, with more than $30,000 being raised for Farmstrong.
Farmstrong is a nationwide health and well-being programme for the rural community, dedicated to helping people live well so they can farm well.
“Farmstrong was an obvious charity choice for both Miraka and Norwood,” said Tim Myers, Norwood CEO. “We’re both strongly motivated to give back to the communities that we work with, and we know that mental health and wellness in our rural communities requires critical attention.”
Since launching in 2015, Farmstrong has supported thousands of farmers by sharing wellness tools and resources through their website, agricultural field days, and educational and social events.
“Encouraging and supporting busy farmers to prioritise their well-being isn’t something that will happen overnight. Having such generous organisations like Norwood and Miraka hosting fundraising events is so important for Farmstrong” said Farmstrong Project Manager, Gerard Vaughan.
Funds raised through this event will help to deliver more of the work we have planned for this year. As well as raising funds, the event also gave all those attending an opportunity to get off the farm, have a laugh and connect, which is exactly what Farmstrong is all about.”
Against the backdrop of one of New Zealand’s most picturesque golf courses, Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary, 20 teams took part in the tournament. Thankfully Taupo played its part, putting on an exceptional autumn day.
At the dinner following the tournament, Farmstrong representative and Waikato dairy farmer, Marc Gascoigne, shared some of his farming experiences and wellness journey.
“When I got up to speak about how Farmstrong helped me deal with anxiety and depression I pointed out that they hadn’t done my self-esteem much good giving me the “loser” prize, even if they’d tried to dress it up as ‘The Most Golf Played Award’. It was a stunning day, everyone had a great time and all for a good cause” said Marc.
The success of the day was all made possible by the enthusiastic support of Miraka and Norwood’s partners. “The day itself was a huge success and our thanks goes to all those that supported us - in particular to the team at Wairakei for their generosity and hospitality,” says Myers. “This event is a way for us, and our suppliers, to connect directly to our rural communities and the issues they’re facing. To raise over $30,000 was an outstanding result and we’re already looking forward to next year!”
